Most
carpeting, when it's installed, is only stretched flat with a tool that the
installer hits with his knee (called a knee kicker, pictured to the right)
because it's the fastest method. Unfortunately this tool fails to stretch
the carpet as tight as needed to prohibit later loosening. The proper method for
stretching and re-stretching,
and the method required by most carpet manufacturers, is
to stretch carpet with a large tool known as a power stretcher (pictured
below). |

Wavy carpets are a problem
not only because they are unsightly, but because they also present a danger of
someone tripping. If left for long, it can shorten carpet life, since yarns tend to wear off the raised carpet ridges sooner than off the low, flat areas
and the excessive flex of the carpet at these ridges can often bend the backing
of the carpet causing it to come apart. |

attaching bars extend across the room to the head, which by lever action
stretches the carpet across the room. The
